Chapter 7

Ray woke up with a strong headache. He opened his eyes slowly. Somehow, he was lying on his side on grass and surrounded by tall trees. The sun came through the branches and dappled everything with light.

He swallowed dryly. When he tried to sit up, a piercing pain shot through his back. “It can’t be,” he said quietly. He reached for the right side of his back and felt his wing. He then reached for the left side.

There was nothing.

Ray slid his fingers along his upper back and felt something wet. “No,” he uttered. He looked down at his hand. It dripped with blood. A few droplets fell on the dry leaves next to him.

Footsteps got closer, crunching on the dry leaves. Kyle came into view. “Ray…”

His heart sank when Kyle’s eyes flooded and tears ran down his cheeks. “No, no, no,” he begged. “Don’t cry. Please.”

Kyle froze in place, staring at him. It was only slightly, but he trembled. “Ray…” he repeated in a broken voice.

“Did you find him?” someone asked. It was Duke. He got closer to Kyle and noticed Ray. “Oh, no.” He looked over his shoulder. “Here!”

Ray didn’t want anyone to look at him. It pained him more to see Kyle’s expression than the agony he felt on his back. He wished this was all just a nightmare.

A few people ran in his direction with a stretcher. “On three,” one of them said. The others held him. “One. Two. Three.” They picked him up and laid him on the stretcher stomach-down. “He’s losing a lot of blood. Hurry.”

Kyle accompanied him. “I will not leave your side again.”

Ray looked away. He didn’t like the mixed feelings. A part of him was extremely happy that Kyle loved him this much, but another part was enraged that Clarice and the Tanners had made Kyle say something like that for other reasons.
